How to choose the right cat tree height for your cat

Taller is not always better. How to match a cat tree's height to your cat's age and confidence, your room, and why a modular tree can grow with them.

Cats think in three dimensions. A high perch lets them watch the room, step away when the doorbell rings and claim their own spot without a fight. So height matters. But the right height depends on who is climbing and where the tree will stand.

Start with your cat, not the ceiling

  • Kittens and senior cats do best with a lower, wider tree and short steps between levels. Around 84 to 100 cm is plenty, with platforms close enough to step up rather than leap.
  • Healthy adult cats are happy on a mid-height tree of roughly 120 to 170 cm, with a lookout at the top and a cave or a soft pad lower down for naps.
  • Confident climbers and multi-cat homes get the most from a tall tree of up to 215 cm. More levels mean more places to be, so nobody has to share the best seat.

Measure the space

Measure the ceiling height and the floor area before you choose. Leave room above the top platform so a cat can sit up and turn around comfortably. Check the footprint too: our kits stand on bases from 60 x 60 cm up to 100 x 100 cm. A spot next to a window gives the top perch something to look at, and for most cats the view is the main attraction.

A tall tree needs a steady base

Height is only useful if the tree stays put. A cat landing on the top platform at full speed puts real force into the structure, and a wobble is enough to make some cats stop using it. Kikska trees stand on solid plywood bases, and every post fixes to the base with a flat-head hex socket screw tightened with a 6 mm Allen wrench. That is why even our 215 cm kits stay steady with several cats playing on them at once.

Space the levels for the way cats move

Cats rarely climb a tree straight up. They hop from level to level. Platforms staggered at different heights work like a staircase, so the top stays within reach for every cat in the house, young or old. Put a wool cave or a faux fur pad at mid height as well: many cats prefer a cosy middle level for sleeping and save the top for watching.

Not sure yet? Choose a tree that can grow

With a modular tree, height is not a one-time decision. Every Kikska part fits every other part, and posts come in 20, 40 and 80 cm, so you can start low for a kitten and add height, platforms and caves as your cat grows in confidence. If a part wears out, you replace only that part, not the whole tree.
