Cat trees

How a Kikska is made: natural materials, recyclable packaging and parts that last

The principles behind every Kikska cat tree: natural, pet-friendly materials, joints that can be undone, parts that can be replaced and packaging you can recycle.

The most sustainable cat tree is the one you never have to throw away. That idea shapes every decision behind a Kikska, from the materials we choose to the way the parts connect and the box they arrive in. Here are the principles we build by.

1. Natural, pet-friendly materials

Cats sleep, scratch and groom on their tree every day, so what it is made of matters. We use solid wood, solid plywood, natural cotton or sisal rope, hand-felted New Zealand wool and natural, pet-friendly oils and glue. Every wooden surface is finished with 100% organic wood oil instead of lacquer, so there is no coating to chip off and nothing harsh for a cat to lick.

2. Built like furniture

A cat tree takes real force: cats land on it at speed, pull on it with their full weight and play on it in pairs. So we build it like furniture rather than a toy. Bases are 20 mm plywood, platforms 15 mm, posts solid wood, and every joint is metal: hex socket screws, hairpin screws, stainless knurled screws and T-nut flanges. Each tree is built to hold several cats at once.

3. Designed to be taken apart

Glue and staples make a product cheaper to assemble and impossible to repair. Every Kikska part connects with screws you can undo with the 6 mm Allen wrench in the box. That is what makes repair, upgrades and a move to a new home simple, and what lets a tree be taken apart and reused rather than scrapped.

4. Replace the part, keep the tree

Posts, platforms, fur pads, wool caves, toys and fittings are all sold separately, and each one fits the tree you already have. When a part wears out, you replace only that part. When your cat's needs change, you add or remove levels. The tree keeps working for years instead of being replaced every couple of seasons.

5. Packaging you can recycle

A well-made product should not arrive wrapped in plastic. Kikska trees and parts arrive in natural, recyclable materials, all the way down to the box. Flatter modular parts also pack more compactly than a fully assembled tree, which means smaller parcels.
